The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stipulates that side airbags need to deploy in less than 1/20th of a second. Current airbag deployment designs can meet that requirement. Unfortunately, those designs exceed the capabilities of the industry standard airbag clamping system. That problem sent Band-IT to the drawing board.
