BAND-IT Employees Celebrate International Women's Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day BAND-IT teamed up with Mile High United Way to honor some amazing women from Colorado’s history as well as discuss other women the volunteers admire or are currently influencing their lives.

The team met at Frances Wisebart Jacobs Park in Southeast Denver for some open air, socially distanced, park improvements including new mulch, debris removal, and other park projects. The park is named for a community organizer and founder of many non-profit organizations in Denver. Her work addressing poverty, sickness, and unsanitary living conditions eventually lead to the creation of the Charity Organization Society, which is now known worldwide as United Way.

In the late 1880’s, she witnessed the great suffering from Tuberculosis in the Denver area and spearheaded the creation of a sanatorium. Originally named in her honor, Frances Jacobs Hospital later grew into National Jewish Health, still recognized for its research and treatment in respiratory, cardiac, immune and related disorders.  

After completing the park maintenance activities, the volunteers were lead through a discussion of other prominent women in Denver’s history as well as women who are currently admired by the volunteers. A few names that they shared: Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Sonia Sotomayor, Debbie Trujillo (United Way’s Frances Wisebart Jacobs award winner in 2020), and “my mother and grandmother.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic has altered our volunteer schedule over the past year, BAND-IT continues to support Mile High United Way with virtual and in-person volunteer activities (where appropriate social distancing and safety guidelines can be followed).
